How do I Configure Eudora?

Configuring Eudora for Windows 95/98/NT:

Click "Start" -> "Programs" -> "Eudora Light"
The first time you run the program, you will be brought into the "Getting Started" section of Eudora.
Under "POP Account" enter username@carroll.com
Under "Real Name" enter your name(optional)
Click "Checking mail"
Set "Check for mail every __ minutes" to 10
Put a check in the box "Save Password"
Click MAPI"
Under "Use Eudora MAPI server," click "Always"
Under Delete MAPI attachments," Click "Never"
Click "OK"
Click "File" -> "Check Mail"
At this point Eudora will prompt you for your password.

How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet Mail

Microsoft Outlook Express version 4.0 for Windows 3.1, 95, NT 4.0

To configure Outlook Express to read Internet mail, follow these steps:

1. In Outlook Express, Click "Accounts" on the "Tools" menu

2. In the "Internet Accounts" dialog box, click "Add," and then click "Mail"

3. In the "Display Name" box, type the name you want others to see when you send a message, and then click "next"

4. In the "E-mail Address" box, type the e-mail address for the account you are using (for example, "janedoe@account.com"), and then click "Next"

5. Under "E-mail Server Names," select the appropriate incoming mail server type (POP3 is the default type), and then type the names of your incoming and outgoing mail servers. Click "Next." NOTE: This information is provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). If you do not know this information, contact your ISP.

6. Depending on your login type, either type you POP account name and password in the "POP Account Name" and "Password" boxes, or click "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SAP)." Click "Next." NOTE: Contact your ISP to determine which login type you should use.

7. In the "Internet Mail Account Name" box, type a name to identify the mail account you are configuring. This is known as the "friendly" name for the account. Click "Next."

8. Click the connection type that you use to connect to the Internet and then click "Next."

If you click "Use my phone line to connect," you are prompted to either crate a new Dial-Up Networking connection or use an existing one. If Dial-Up Networking has been configured for your ISP, click "Use an existing dial-up connection," click the name for you Dial-Up Networking connection in the list, and then click "Next."

If you click "Connect using my local area network (LAN)" or "I will
establish my internet connection manually," you are not prompted for any additional settings.

9. Click "Finish."

How to Configure Netscape

Netscape actually requires very little configuration. The only two options that most people ask to configure in Netscape have to do with Mail and News.   We have included the recommended settings for these two areas of Netscape here.

After loading Netscape onto your computer, run the program.
click "Options"
select "mail" and News Preferences"
select the "servers" tab

Fill in these fields
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: carroll.com
Incoming Mail (POP) Server: carroll.com
POP user name: your login name
Maximum Message Size: check NONE
Messagges are copied from the server to the local disk: check Removed from the Server
News (NNTP) Server: news.carroll.com

Select the "Identity" tab, and fill in these fields:
Your Name: your real name
Your Email: yourlogin@carroll.com
Your Organization: Carroll-Net, Inc.
click OK

Windows 95 Tech Support Checklist


Check Information

-Verify User Name/Password are correct and account is valid.
-Make sure Caps Lock is off, and that the account isn't disabled/deleted

Check Wiring

Check that modem is plugged directly into the wall (Not through an answering machine/splitter)

Reboot Machine

Shut machine off completely. (if it's an external modem, shut modem off too...) (then turn modem back on...) power system back on


Check control panel-> modems
Make sure only one modem is installed and that it is the correct modem
Check max speed (lower it to 57600/38400/9600)
Check init string (disable MNP5/change S10 register)


Check control panel-> network
Confirm dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP
If there, remove IPX/SPX and Net Beui
TCP/IP Properties:
IP address: Obtain an IP address automatically
WINS configuration: disable WINS resolution
DNS Configuration:
host: x
domain: carroll.com
DNS server search order: 199.224.10.2       165.254.2.51
domain suffix search order: carroll.com

Check My Computer -> Dial-Up Networking -> Carroll-Net (right Click and click properties)
Server types:
ONLY -- Enable software Compression and TCP/IP should be checked. Uncheck anything else.
Click TCP/IP Settings...
Make sure server assigned IP address is checked
Make sure Specify Name Server Address is checked
Primary DNS 199.224.10.2
Secondary DNS 165.254.2.51
Primary WINS 0.0.0.0
Secondary WINS 0.0.0.0
Make sure both bottom boxes are checked off

Check for extra winstock.dll files

Start -> Find -> Files or Folders
Named: winstock.dll
Look in: C:
Include subfolders: check box
Click "Find Now"
Delete any not in C:\Windows folder

Try different dial in number

Try different phone line in the house
