Backup Questions
1. Is there a fee for the onsite server ?
No. The Backup Server from Carroll-Net is Free. And it’s warranted for the life of your subscription. If there’s ever any trouble, Carroll-Net will replace it Free of charge.
2. How does the backup work?
You get superior Three Way Backup; automatically on your site nightly, remotely to our site nightly and then archived for five business days at our datacenter.

Here’s how it works. We’ll do the backing up of your data files nightly at your site and at our Datacenter, then we archive the data and hold onto it for five business days. You are responsible for storing original copies of your application software on your site and replace and restoring your server should it go down.
  • Should your server crash, your data will be available to you immediately from the Carroll.Net server we locate at your office.
  • Should the worst happen and you are prohibited access to your offices, you will have access to all of your data that is stored at our Data Center within hours.
3. What if I need to keep my data archived for a longer period of time?
Healthy Service guarantees five business days of retention.
For those customers looking for longer options, you have three simple choices;
1) Best Effort Recovery, 2) Long Term Retention and 3) Tape Snapshot.
  • Most customer’s rely on our best effort recovery for data restores after five business days. Carroll-Net has backups extending back many months. If we have the data file you need, we’ll recover it and upload it to your Healthy Server. There is no charge for this option.
  • For those who require more then best effort, Carroll-Net offer’s a Long Term Retention service. The fee is $1/GB per month. Just specify the number of months you require on your order form or by contacting your sales person.
  • For those customer’s with stringent retention requirements (typical of publicly traded or government regulated businesses), we also offer Tape Snapshot. Any time you ask, Carroll-Net will snapshot your data files to permanent media. The fee for this service is one-time $150.
No matter what retention option you choose, there is NEVER A CHARGE to recover your data.
4. Can I backup Exchange and how is this done?
Yes. Exchange backups are done using Microsoft’s NTBACKUP.
To backup an Exchange Server, customer’s perform the following steps:
  • On the first day of each month, you perform a FULL BACKUP, and store the resulting .BKF file on a share backed up by the Healthy Server.
  • Each day you perform a DIFFERENTIAL BACKUP of Exchange and store the differential update on a share backed up by the Healthy Server.

5. Can I backup SQL? Can I backup Oracle?

6. Will HS work with Mac?
Yes. Healthy Server can backup your Mac server two ways:
  • If you already have Samba enabled, just provide Carroll-Net with the login information and the Healthy Server will connect to your server and “Pull” backups.
  • You also have the option of “Pushing” backups to the Healthy Server. Carroll-Net will create a share you can connect to from your Mac (via NFS or CIFS/SMB). And, we’ll give you the script that will automatically Push the backups.
7. Can I backup Unix or Linux servers?
Yes. Healthy Server can backup your Unix/Linux server over CIFS/SMB or NFS, whichever you have configured. Just provide Carroll-Net with the login information, and the Healthy Server will connect to your server and “Pull” backups.
8. Can I do a bare metal backup? Can I backup server images?
Sure you can. Just use your favorite imaging software to take a snapshot. Direct the snapshot to a share backed up by your Healthy Server. And each time you update the snapshot, Carroll-Net will back it up.
9. How often can I do a full backup?
The short answer is as often as you like. Most customer’s ask for once a day, but if you prefer more frequent just let us know.
10. How long do you keep the data?
Healthy Service guarantees five business days of retention.
With the Volume Shadow Copy service, your Healthy Server may have backups going back a lot further, sometimes months. And since it uses spare disk space, there’s no charge for this retention.
Carroll-Net has options for customer’s that require longer retention, see the FAQ question “What if I need to keep my data archived for a longer period of time?”
11. Can I backup PC’s and Laptops?
Sure. Just let us know which PC’s and laptops you want backed up. Leave them turned on when you go home at night, and we’ll back them up.
12. How big is the drive on it?
Carroll-Net will size the hard drive based on the amount of storage you need. And we’ll monitor your usage, and upgrade you for Free anytime you need more.
13. How many revisions can I keep on the Healthy Server?
Most customer’s are able to keep weeks, sometimes even months, of revisions on their Healthy Server. The actual number of revisions will depend on how much of your data changes each night, and how much spare space is available on your Healthy Server to store the revisions.
Recovery Questions
1. How can I do restore?
Restores are a snap. Just connect to your Healthy Server using the supplied password and copy the data back to your server.
2. If my building has a disaster, how do I get my data and how fast?
Just contact us on our support at (888) 432-1638. Let us know the format you’d like, and we’ll recover your data and express ship it to you overnight.
By the way: Because we monitor your services 24x7, we know when our customers are having a disaster and we’ll contact them – usually before they even realize trouble has begun!
3. What do I do if my HS is stolen with my critical data on it?
Three things will happen simultaneously:
  • First, Carroll-Net will build and ship you a replacement server,
  • Second, we’ll issue a remote delete to erase your data from the stolen system,
  • and Third, we’ll activate our Theft Recovery system and work with Law Enforcement to recover the system and punish the thieves.
Security Questions
1. What do you monitor?
Carroll-Net has two categories of monitoring:
  • First, we monitor your organization’s servers. We check them several times a day to make sure they are accessible. If we detect a problem we’ll contact you, and help you to recover.
  • The second category of monitoring is the Healthy Server itself. We check it continuously to ensure it’s functioning correctly, and has enough resources to complete a backup. If it doesn’t, we’ll analyze the trouble and automatically initiate repair or replacement.
There is no charge for monitoring and all Healthy Server repairs or replacements are Free of charge.
2. Where is your datacenter located? Is my data stored in the US or overseas?
Carroll-Net’s primary datacenter is in Northern New Jersey. We also have two backup Datacenter’s nearby that are part of our Disaster Recovery plan.
Your information never leaves the United States, and is always stored under the direct control and supervision of Carroll-Net personnel.
Setup Questions
1. Is there software to install?
Healthy Server supports both Agentless and Agent based backups. Most customer’s prefer Agentless because there’s nothing to add to their server. But for special circumstances(like laptops & desktops) we offer an Agent based backup as well.The Agent software is FREE, and customer’s can mix-and match Agent & Agentless to suit their needs.
2. Is it rack-mountable?
Sure. The Server can be rack mounted using a shelf or tray. We recommend the 13” Relay Rack Shelf (part number 2USHL-020HALF-13V) from http://www.racksolutions.com/relay-rack-shelves-configurable-13.shtml. MSRP $54.95
3. What does it need to plug into?
Your healthy server will need a port on your network switch (10/100 or 1Gb), and power from a UPS.
4. What permissions do you need?
For your Windows backups, just add the Carroll-Net account to the ‘BUILTIN\Backup Operators’ group.

5. Do you comply with HIPAA regulations?
