What
software can we run on our workstations to send and
receive E-Mail?
|
|
The
Message Server is a standards based Internet mail
server. It will handle E-Mail from any software that
uses POP3/SMTP. The list of supported clients is quite
large with most vendors either offering support now, or
have announced future support. Here is a partial list of
mail clients:
If
your client is not listed here, please contact your
software vendor to ask them when they plan to support
Internet standards.
In
the meantime, Carroll-Net can supply you with a licensed
copy of Eudora Lite. Please contact our support staff at
staff@message-server.com
to request your free software. Please be sure to specify
either diskette or CD-ROM. Include what type of computer
and what operating system you are using.

What
will I have to change on my workstations to use the
Message Server?
|
|
The
Message Server requires TCP/IP services to be installed
on each computer that wants to send and receive E-Mail.
If your workstation is not already configured to use
TCP/IP, this will need to be added to your existing
protocol stack.
Carroll-Net
will provide your company with complete step-by-step
instructions on how to configure TCP/IP services on your
workstations. We will also provide with detailed
worksheets to make the implementation steps smooth.

Server?

All
Operating Systems.
We
know it is a sweeping statement, but we have yet to find
an OS that does not work with the Message Server. Really
the key to compatiblitiy is that the Message Server is
Internet standards based. As long as there is a TCP/IP
protocol stack available on your computer platform, you
can be assured your systems will be compatible.
Here
is a partial list of known compatible Operating Systems:
-
Windows
3.11, WFWG, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT

Can
I use my existing server and just add the Carroll-Net
software?
|
|
The
concept of the Carroll-Net Message Server is that of a
complete turn-key solution. As you probably already
know, solutions based on providing software are rarely
plug-and-play, certainly not those based on complex
server software packages like network email.
To
solve the problems normally associated with installing
software and solving software and hardware problems, we
have developed a complete Message Server (sometimes
referred to as an E-Mail appliance). Like a home based
appliance, the device comes ready to use right out of
the box.
This
approach completely avoids the hassles normally
associated with setting up a server, not to mention the
overwhelming cost of maintenance and ownership this sort
of responsibility bears.

Is
the Message Server compatible with our Apple computers?
|
|
The
Message Server is completely compatible with Apple
computers that use the MacOS system 7.5.3 and higher.
The
Message Server does require that there be one Windows95
computer available somewhere within your network. This
is used to run the Carroll-Net management software.
If
you do not have a Windows95 computer to use for this
purpose, you can get around the problem, by having
Carroll-Net perform the management for you.

We
have a Lotus mail server. Why would we need a
Carroll-Net Message Server?
|
|
Lotus
does not support dialup Internet accounts for sending
and receiving Internet mail. This means if you want to
get the benefits of Internet E-Mail through your Lotus
server, you would need to have a dedicated Internet
connection.
The
Carroll-Net Message Server can act as an E-Mail gateway
to your Lotus server. This would give your company the
flexibility to use an inexpensive dialup Internet
account for sending and receiving all company mail.

Is
the Carroll-Net Message Server compatible with our Token
Ring network?
|
The
Message Server will work in a Token Ring environment,
if there is a machine on your network that can route
between Ethernet and Token Ring. For example, Novell
machines can support dual network cards, and with the
correct software installed can route packets from one
interface to the other.
If
you do not have a Novell network, Carroll-Net can
provide you with an optional Token Ring to Ethernet
bridge. The specifics of the solution will depend upon
how your network is configred. Please send email for staff@message-server.com
for more details.
